Sang H. Choi, M.D.
Dr. Choi hails from Pendleton, Indiana, where he graduated as the Class Valedictorian. Dr. Choi graduated from Indiana University
with an undergraduate degree in both chemistry and biology,graduating Magna Cum Laude.
Dr. Choi is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine. He performed his five year specialty training in Orthopaedic
Surgery at the McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. He has authored and presented numerous articles on Orthopaedic
Surgery. Dr. Choi had been in practice of Orthopaedic Surgery in Flint, Michigan and was a clinical instructor in the Orthopaedic
Residency training program, prior to coming to Florida in 1992.
Dr. Choi has had post graduate training in hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery. He also had extensive training in hip and knee joint
replacement and has performed well over 1000 hip and knee joint replacements. Dr. Choi is a design consultant for total knee replacement
instrumentation. He is Board Certified, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons, a member of American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and a consulting physician for the Toronto and Dunedin Blue Jays.
John H. Shim, M.D.
Dr. Shim earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then received his medical degree at the
State University of New York, Health Science Center, in Syracuse. After completing a one year general surgery internship at Albert
Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, he continued his training there with a four year orthopaedic surgery residency.
Dr. Shim concluded his formal education with a one year fellowship in spinal surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital located in
Boston, Massachusetts. While in Boston, Dr. Shim was a clinical instructor at Tufts University Medical Center where he taught
orthopaedic residents. In addition to his teaching duties Dr. Shim was an attending physician at the Boston Back Clinic and was actively
involved with the ongoing research and patient care at the New England Spine Care Rehablitation Center. Currently, he is a member of The
American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The Scoliosis Association, Inc. and the North American Spine Society, and is a Fellow of the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Shim's area of expertise is surgery of the spine and neck. Dr. Shim is involved in a number of research projects including the
development of minimally invasive spine surgery, and has presented papers at regional and national meetings. Dr. Shim has been in
practice in the bay area since 1993.
Mark D. Torke, M.D.
Dr. Torke earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and his Medical degree at the University of Wisconsin. He continued his
training with his internship and orthopaedic surgical residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he cared for
many intercollegiate and Olympic class athletes.
Dr. Torke did a Pediatric orthopaedic rotation at Alfred E. Du Pont Institute. In addition to sports injuries, his special interests
include arthroscopic surgery, cartilage transplant surgery, total joint replacement, and pediatric orthopaedics. He is a member of the
American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Torke has been in practice
in the Tampa Bay area since 1990.
Steven C. Mirabello, M.D.
Dr. Mirabello received his undergraduate degree at Columbia University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He received his medical degree from
Harvard Medical School. He did his surgical internship in California under the UCLA training program in Santa Barbara.
Dr Mirabello acquired his Orthopaedic training of four years at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Institute in Manhattan. During his last
year of residency he received the honor of being elected to the Chief Resident position. Subsequently he did a Fellowship in Sports Medicine
with the concentration of shoulder surgery in Alabama under Drs. Andrews and Clancey. In Alabama he took care of many professional athletes
including Bo Jackson, Charles Barkley, Fran Tarkenton, Bruce Smith and Roger Clemens. He has made many significant presentations in the
area of Sports Medicine and has written several articles and scientific papers.
Dr. Mirabello was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon on the west coast of Florida to perform a cartilage transplant. He has recently published
several papers on shoulder surgery and the examination and treatment of the shoulder. He has come to this area to develop a Sports Medicine
Practice, as well as concentrate on shoulder, knee and elbow surgery/reconstruction.
Dr. Mirabello is currently the director of our Sports Medicine Program, the Orthopaedic Surgeon for the Toronto Blue Jays, a consulting
physician for the Philadelphia Phillies and the team physician for the Dunedin Blue Jays Baseball Teams. He is an Associate Member of the
Association of Major League Baseball Team Physicians. He is Board Certified, a Fellow of the American Academy of Othopaedic Surgeons,
American College of Surgeons and a member of The American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society, and Arthroscopy Association of North America.
Dr. Steven Mirabello is one of twelve surgeons from an elite group of surgeons selected to assess the clinical performance of the unispacer
for the purpose of evaluating its level of success and utility. Unispacer is a new and innovative hemiarthroplasty knee prosthesis and it is
conceivable that the unispacer may delay the need for total knee replacement for 10 years or more. It is also conceivable that the unispacer
may become the treatment of choice for patients who are more active or have other health issues that pose an increased risk for total knee
