Duane Belongie, MD

Dr. Duane Belongie, MD (bel-ON’-gee) grew up in California then moved to upstate New York to earn his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University.  He subsequently went to the University of Iowa for graduate studies in biomechanical engineering where he received his master’s degree. He worked as a mechanical engineer for seven years, with his last several years designing medical equipment, before pursuing his calling as a physician.

He then went back to medical school to become an orthopedic surgeon, and graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. His orthopedic training followed at Tulane University, with pediatric rotations done at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital of Atlanta.  His residency was interrupted by Hurricane Katrina.  In the wake of the hurricane, he stayed in New Orleans during the storm and for 5 days after the Hurricane, treating patients as part of the orthopedic hurricane team. The program was forced to close after the hurricane, so he finished his last 2 years of training at the prestigious Campbell Clinic in Memphis Tennessee.

He has worked as a general orthopedic surgeon in the Trinity area, north of Tampa, since finishing his residency.  He is board certified by the ABOS, in general orthopedics, and has stayed quite general in the procedures he provides.  His current primary interests are in knee and shoulder surgery, including total and partial knee replacements as well as shoulder arthroscopy and replacement.  He recently did a 3 month fellowship in shoulder surgery to get current in the latest treatment of rotator cuff surgery and in Reverse Shoulder Replacement for treatment of shoulder arthritis resulting from long term rotator cuff tears.  However, he maintains a very general practice including general fracture care, hip replacement with computer navigation, hip bursa arthroscopy, carpal and cubital tunnel treatment, and thumb arthritis surgery as well as treatment of several other common hand and elbow disorders.

Dr. Belongie takes pride in developing relationships with his patients.  He likes to see his patients personally at all office visits, before and after surgery whenever possible.  He is very willing to try non-operative treatments before moving to surgery.  And above all, he believes that communication is the key to a successful patient doctor relationship.  He is fluent in Spanish, and welcomes patients who feel more comfortable speaking Spanish.

Hola, Bienvenidos.
Yo soy Doctor Duane Belongie.
